Alan Langley, born and raised in Montgomery, AL, moved with his mother and 3 siblings to Fort Deposit, AL in 1974, at age 14. From a very early age he knew that he would have to work to have extra money. The year he moved to town he began working for Mr. Fred Hatfield at the Fort Deposit Chopping Block. He swept and mopped the floors as well as worked the service counter. This is where he first learned the importance of good customer service. Knowing and caring about the needs of his customers would be a lesson that would shape and pave the path for his future.
Another thing that strongly influence his future was Mr. Hatfield. He took Alan under his wing and at age 14 began to teach him the skill of meat cutting. In the same year, he met the girl who would eventually become his partner in business and life, Kathy Lewis. In 1979 after graduating high school, he moved back to Montgomery and on March 15, 1980, he married Kathy. They moved back to Fort Deposit and began a family. Over the next 16 years he would work his way from a meat cutter to market manager to store manager. On Labor Day, in 1995, he went to work for Mr. Norman Olive at the Cloverland IGA on Court Street in Montgomery. After 42 years Mr. Olive decided to retire and sell his beloved grocery store. Mr. Olive believed in Alan so much, that after being market manager for only two years, he sold him his first grocery store, Cloverland AG, on March 31, 1997.
In January 2000, Mr. Wayne Guthrie came on board as market manager of Cloverland AG. Two years later, on January 13, 2002, Alan and Kathy had the opportunity to purchase the old Big Bear in Union Springs. At that time Mr. Ronnie Stanley came to work for the Langleys as store manager of the Union Springs AG. Alan and Kathy ate, breathed and slept, or lack thereof, these grocery stores. They put everything they owned up as collateral, so they knew that they had to make the stores successful and with a great meat program and great customer service they discovered they had a combination that would make the stores just that, successful!
On January 18, 2005, they had an opportunity to buy a store a little closer to home. Hayneville AG, formerly Frank's Red and White, was the beginning of Langley Inc. A year or two later, Langley Inc.'s corporate office would be set up, in the apartments next door to the Hayneville store. At this point in time Mr. Guthrie and Mr. Stanley took on a bigger role in the company as the company’s meat and grocery supervisors.
The year of 2009 was a huge year for Langley Inc. On May 18, 2009, Langley Inc. bought, what is said to be one of the oldest grocery store in Prattville. What was known for years as the Super Foods and the Big Bear is now know as Prattville AG. Later that year, a store would go up for sale that would not only affect the Langley's but the entire community where they had spent their childhoods and raised their children. On October 1, 2009, the Langley's purchased Fort Deposit AG.
The Langley’s feel that they have been truly blessed by God. Hard work, determination and faith are the core values that the Langley’s have based their business upon.
